This is a localised species holding territories on fast-flowing mountain rivers in forested areas.<\/span><\/p><p class=\"font_8 wixui-rich-text__text\"><span class=\"wixui-rich-text__text\">Classified as \u2018endangered\u2019 by the International Union of Conservation for Nature (IUCN) and as \u2018nationally vulnerable\u2019 by DOC, the whio \u2013 named for the high-pitched whistle made by the male &#8211; has been severely impacted by exotic predators such as stoats.<\/span><\/p><p class=\"font_8 wixui-rich-text__text\"><a class=\"wixui-rich-text__text\" href=\"https:\/\/www.forestlifeforce.org.nz\/whio-old\" target=\"_self\"><span class=\"wixui-rich-text__text\">read established <a href=\"https:\/\/saje.nz\/forest\/maungataniwha-native-forest\/\">two sanctuary areas<\/a> within the\u00a0Maungataniwha Native Forest\u00a0where predator populations are being reduced in an effort to provide a safe place for a variety of native bird species to breed.<\/span><\/p><p class=\"font_8 wixui-rich-text__text\"><span class=\"wixui-rich-text__text\">The first is a 600-hectare sanctuary centred on Waiau Camp while the second is a 400-hectare swathe of bushland bordering the Te Hoe River.<\/span><\/p><p class=\"font_8 wixui-rich-text__text\"><a class=\"wixui-rich-text__text\" href=\"https:\/\/www.forestlifeforce.org.nz\/forest-restoration-old\" target=\"_self\"><span class=\"wixui-rich-text__text\">read our principal projects in the\u00a0<a class=\"wixui-rich-text__text\" href=\"https:\/\/www.forestlifeforce.org.nz\/maungataniwha-native\" target=\"_self\">Maungataniwha Native Forest\u00a0<\/a>involves increasing the wild-grown population of kakabeak (Clianthus maximus) &#8211; an extremely rare type of shrub.<\/span><\/p><p class=\"font_8 wixui-rich-text__text\"><span class=\"wixui-rich-text__text\">We collect seeds and propagate them both within our two protected propagation enclosures near Waiau Camp (designed to prevent access by browsing rabbits, hares and ungulates such as deer, pigs and goats) and at other sites around Hawke\u2019s Bay.<\/span><\/p><p class=\"font_8 wixui-rich-text__text\"><a class=\"wixui-rich-text__text\" href=\"https:\/\/www.forestlifeforce.org.nz\/kakabeak\" target=\"_self\"><span class=\"wixui-rich-text__text\">read 4,000-hectare Maungataniwha Pine Forest adjacent to our\u00a0<a class=\"wixui-rich-text__text\" href=\"https:\/\/www.forestlifeforce.org.nz\/maungataniwha-native\" target=\"_self\">Maungataniwha Native Forest<\/a>\u00a0property was once mature native forest. It was logged progressively and then burned before being put under pine.<\/span><\/p><p class=\"font_8 wixui-rich-text__text\"><span class=\"wixui-rich-text__text\">We took ownership of the block with the aim of converting the pine plantation back to regenerating native forest.
