WHIO<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Whio, commonly known as Blue Duck, are highly endangered, threatened by predation \u2013 mainly by stoats – and loss of habitat. This is a localised species holding territories on fast-flowing mountain rivers in forested areas.<\/span><\/p>

Classified as \u2018endangered\u2019 by the International Union of Conservation for Nature (IUCN) and as \u2018nationally vulnerable\u2019 by DOC, the whio \u2013 named for the high-pitched whistle made by the male – has been severely impacted by exotic predators such as stoats.<\/span><\/p>

Once widespread throughout New Zealand\u2019s back-country rivers, the whio population is now severely fragmented and chick counts are falling.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

We are involved in establishing secure breeding areas for the whio populations of both the\u00a0Maungataniwha Native Forest and Pohokura<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>

These are not captive breeding programmes. They\u2019re about encouraging whio to call our properties home because they\u2019re safe places to live and breed.<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t
