{"id":2787,"date":"2015-07-28T13:15:00","date_gmt":"2015-07-28T01:15:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/saje.nz\/forest\/?p=2787"},"modified":"2025-08-13T13:17:33","modified_gmt":"2025-08-13T01:17:33","slug":"rachel-hunter-welcomes-budget-cash-for-kiwi-spotlights-other-species","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/saje.nz\/forest\/rachel-hunter-welcomes-budget-cash-for-kiwi-spotlights-other-species\/","title":{"rendered":"Rachel Hunter welcomes budget cash for kiwi; spotlights other species"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p id=\"viewer-alaoq\"><strong><strong><strong>Kiwi icon Rachel Hunter has welcomed the government\u2019s decision to allocate more than $11 million for kiwi conservation efforts in this year\u2019s budget.<\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"viewer-114om\">Ms Hunter, who is Patron of Hawke\u2019s Bay-based <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.forestlifeforce.org.nz\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Forest Lifeforce Restoration Trust<\/a> (FLRT), said the funding was likely to bolster the successes already being delivered by a wide variety of kiwi conservation initiatives across the country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"viewer-3q41\">\u201cOne of the things that really struck me when I became involved with the Trust was the wide variety of organisations involved in nurturing and protecting kiwi through each and every stage of their lifecycle,\u201d Ms Hunter said. \u201cA great many Kiwis from every walk of life are involved in protecting our national symbol from obliteration and its fitting that government has chosen to help them.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"viewer-1nor2\">Ms Hunter urged the government not to lose sight of the work that\u2019s needed to reverse the decline of less emblematic species of flora and fauna and said this was an area the FLRT would continue to work hard on with the support of DOC and all its other partners whose support and expertise was so vital.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"viewer-91iad\">\u201cConservation in New Zealand can no longer be purely the preserve of government agencies,\u201d Ms Hunter said. \u201cThe job\u2019s too big, the battle\u2019s too fierce. Landowners and the private sector all have a role to play.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"viewer-delpg\">more<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"viewer-114om\">In addition to its <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.forestlifeforce.org.nz\/kiwiproject.html\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Maungataniwha Kiwi Project<\/a> the FLRT runs a restoration project aimed at boosting the wild-grown population of the flamboyant and extremely rare shrub called the <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.forestlifeforce.org.nz\/kakabeak.html\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Kakabeak<\/a>, undertakes various <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.forestlifeforce.org.nz\/pest.html\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">pest control and eradication<\/a> initiatives and assists with the <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.forestlifeforce.org.nz\/trans.html\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">re-introduction of forest birds<\/a> to previously abandoned habitats.
