If someone asked you who renews your business domain name, would you know where to look? It is worth keeping that information somewhere your business can find it, even when a provider handles the work for you.
Your domain name is the address people use to find your website. It may also be used for business email. Registering the name, hosting the website and providing email are separate services, although one business may arrange all three. Own Your Online domain guidance
Check whose name is on the registration
For a .nz domain, the Domain Name Commission recommends checking that the registrant details identify you or your business, rather than your developer or registrar. Its public domain lookup can help you find the registration details and registrar. Domain Name Commission guidance
Having a provider manage the domain is quite normal. The useful distinction is between the person doing the administration and the business identified as the domain name holder.
If the details look unfamiliar, ask your provider to explain them before making changes. This is particularly useful if you bought the business or inherited its website from someone else.
Know how renewal is handled
Record who sends the renewal notice, who pays it and which email address receives it. Check that the person dealing with the notice is still part of the business.
Automatic renewal can help, but the payment method and contact details still need attention. Own Your Online recommends keeping both current and setting reminders where needed. Own Your Online domain guidance
A missed renewal can affect more than the website. The Domain Name Commission explains that a cancelled .nz domain in its redemption period will not support the associated website or email services. If there is a problem, contact the provider promptly. Domain Name Commission guidance
Keep a small record with your business information
You do not need another complicated system. Add the domain name, provider, renewal arrangements and responsible contact to the records you already keep. Store account access details securely, with a way for an authorised person to recover access.
If a staff member or supplier changes, include the domain arrangements in the handover. There is no need to move everything to a new provider simply to make the records clearer.
If you are unsure who looks after your domain name, get in touch. We can help you identify the arrangements and work out whether anything needs updating.
