In this video we talk about the frequency of updates to your site.

Transcript:

So something we often get asked is: how often do I need to update my content for the website.

People have been told that they need to update their content on a regular basis to keep the rankings up in the search rankings and what we have found is that it\’s really dependent on your website.

If you\’ve got a website that’s something like the New Zealand Herald, it’s a daily news site Google is going to expect that it’s going to have content coming through every day, but if you\’re the Encyclopedia Britannica it\’s completely the opposite, it\’s a historical record and so you\’re not expecting that content to change all that often.

So if you are an accommodation provider you might only need to update your content every 6 months, maybe every 3 months when you\’ve got something good to put on there.

Maybe you\’ve done some new decor or you\’ve changed some of the duvet covers then you can get in there take some photos update the content and maybe write a blog post telling people what you\’ve done.

And if you use the changes in your normal business as a catalyst for what you doing on the website then it means that you can have regular content even if it\’s not daily or weekly but regular enough that means that the search engines are going to keep up with you.

The post Do I have to keeping changing my website content to maintain web rankings first appeared on SAJE.

We have seen the New Zealand WordPress community when we have attended WordCamps, the large unconferences that happen each year in NZ to discuss all thibgs WordPress (and some no WordPress specific topics)

The closest local community (Meetup) to Kerikeri was in Auckland and try as we might, it was too difficult to get to one of these events.

After support and encouragement from the organisers of the Auckland event, we decided to start one in the North.

WordPress Meetups are open events, open to all who are interested in WordPress: people who code for it, people who design for it and people who use it daily to run their business.

We had an initial get together earlier this month and have been wonderfully supported by Judy at BizSpace (https://www.bizspace.nz/) who is providing us the venue.

Next month is all about Security, and we will talk about the best way to secure your website and some of the plugins you can use to achieve this, we\’ll also talk about other security aspects like passwords to help protect your site.

If you are interested in coming along, we have a Meetup Group here: https://www.meetup.com/Northland-WordPress-Meetup/ Sign up and you will get notifications about when the next Meetup will be.

It will be great to see you there.

The post WordPress Meetups in Northland first appeared on SAJE.

When, while lovely valley teems with vapour around meand meridian sun strikes the upper impenetrable . foliage of my trees, and but a thousand unknown plants .are noticed by when I hear the buzz . of the little world among the stalks, and grow familiar indescribable forms of the insects . and flies, then I feel the presence of the Almighty, who formed us in his own image, and the breath of that universal love which bears and sustains us, as it floats around us in an eternity of bliss; and then, my friend, when darkness overspreads my eyes, and heaven and earth seem to dwell in my soul and absorb its power, like the form of a beloved mistress, then I often think with longing, Oh, would I could describe these conceptions, could impress upon paper all that is living so full and warm within me, that it might be the mirror of my soul, as my soul is the mirror of the infinite God!

O my friend — but it is too much for my strength — I sink under the weight of the splendour of these visions! A wonderful serenity has taken possession of my entire soul, like these sweet mornings of spring which I enjoy with my whole heart. I am alone, and feel the charm of existence in this spot, which was created for the bliss of souls like mine.

I am so happy, my dear friend, so absorbed in the exquisite sense of mere tranquil existence, that I neglect my talents. I should be incapable of drawing a single stroke at the present moment; and yet I feel that I never was a greater artist than now.

When, while the lovely valley teems with vapour around me, and the meridian sun strikes the upper surface of the impenetrable foliage of my trees, and but a few stray gleams steal into the inner sanctuary, I throw myself down among the tall grass by the trickling stream; and, as I lie close to the earth, a thousand unknown plants are noticed by me: when I hear the buzz of the little world among the stalks, and grow familiar with the countless indescribable forms of the insects and flies, then I feel the presence of the Almighty, who formed us in his own image, and the breath of that universal love which bears and sustains us, as it floats around us in an eternity of bliss; and then, my friend, when darkness overspreads my eyes, and heaven and earth seem to dwell in my soul and absorb its power, like the form of a beloved mistress, then I often think with longing, Oh, would I could describe these conceptions, could impress upon paper all that is living so full and warm within me.

As with most things on the internet related to Google, what Google wants, they usually get.

In this instance we are talking about a secure web.

It sounds like a good idea and now Google is taking steps to encourage everyone to move in that direction.

From earlier this year, the Google Chrome browser would identify all pages like login forms and other pages requiring passwords and credit card numbers were flagged as \”Not Secure\”

This was done as a gentle nudge to website owners that Google would like all pages on the internet to be secure. (Secure in this context means that the pages are protected by SSL or Secure Sockets Layer, and information passed between your computer and the website is encrypted so that anyone snooping on your communications couldn\’t read it)

To further this objective, it is reported that in October all pages with forms in them (and if you include a signup form on every page, then all pages will be flagged) will be marked as not secure if the page is not secured using a SSL certificate.

The end goal is that all website across the internet will be secure and any without SSL certificates will be highlighted as being insecure.

From a trust perspective it is important to make sure you move to SSL relatively quickly

To this end we will be ensuring all of our clients\’ websites are protected by SSL and we are going through this process at the moment.

If your site is not SSL protected, you need to talk to your host or webs designer about getting it done.

The post The Inevitable Move to Secure Web Pages first appeared on SAJE.

I\’m looking at you Vodafone!

Vodafone has announced that it is shutting down its consumer email services and advising users to set up accounts on free services such as gmail or Hotmail. It is promising to forward messages sent to their Vodafone email addresses to customers’ new email addresses without any time limit and regardless of whether or not they remain a Vodafone customer.

So what can you do when an ISP like Vodafone decides to opt out of proving email?

One option is to go to a free service like Outlook.com or Gmail. That\’s all well and good if it is personal email, but business email is a little different

Having email with your domain name is a much better idea from a branding perspective and also from a continuity perspective.

It then doesn\’t matter what your internet provider decides to do, it is an independent service you can continue to use.

If you already have a website, talk to your provider about whether you can add email to that service. All of our hosting offerings have the option of email and a number of clients have contacted us about moving their Vodafone mail to our servers.

So whether it is because you are thinking of moving internet providers, or they pull the rug out from under you, choosing independent hosting of your email can be a way to prevent unwanted upheaval.

The post When Your ISP Won\’t Do Email first appeared on SAJE.

It had been well overdue.

I decided at the start of the year that we needed to get out an involved in these sort of things, learn more, network with developers and others in the wider industry.

Wordcamp was the first of these and it was a great experience.

Wonderfully organised, everyone was looked after and apart from Bill Bennett\’s tech destroying session on writing content, went off prettyy much wiothout a hitch

Re: #wcakl2017 \”Once is happenstance. Twice is coincidence.\” That was the lights & the projector. Thankfull we didn\’t get to three times…

— Bill Bennett (@billbennettnz) March 12, 2017

There were some awesome speakers on board, ranging from HTTP2, REST API\’s and speed to content, support and Impostor Syndrome!

I got some great learnings from the weekend, not just specifics from each talk but widening the scope of what is possible.

Getting out of the trenches and taking the time to learn and absorb new things has been a wonderful thing

Maybe it\’s time for a WP Meetup in the North…
